King John's Palace - the Kings Houses - a heritage priority
Why action is urgently needed.
Nottinghamshire County Council have now completed the ‘condition survey’ of the Palace.
The archaeologist involved has concluded that the remains are much older than previously thought. The Romanesque building style is very similar to number of west country church buildings built in the late 12th century.

The conclusion to the report was that the Palace was in a dreadful state. There is widespread damage to the walls at ground level with major salt damage and cavitation. Basically the lower stones have been attacked by chemicals in the ground and air and have suffered major erosion resulting in dangerous overhangs. Higher up various overhangs and cavities have developed as the mortar crumbles.
Round the base of the walls the litter of stones showing clean mortar on their faces provides further evidence of the fragile state of the ruin. The County Council have applied to English Heritage for approval of the necessary work. Only when permission is given can they seek estimates for the required work and then look for funding.
