The Dog and Duck Meadow - a joint environmental and historical priority
The link above will take you to the pages on the history and function of the water meadows.
The working group consisting of the representatives of the Friends of Kings Clipstone, The Mansfield Woodhouse Society, Sherwood Forest Trust and a local hydrological expert are no targeting the Clipstone Park Water Meadow system, seeking to preserve and if possible restore parts of the system.
As the best preserved fragment of the system the meadow is considered to be a very high priority. There is some money available in the current financial year for small scale works. Sherwood Forest Trust had already been working on a series of interpretation boards for the system. The intention had been to place a board on Gorsethorpe Lane. This has now been changed to the embankment above the meadow on grounds of safety.
The group's current proposals for action on the meadows are
1. Construction of a small viewing point at the side of the path on the embankment to display the interpretation boards.
2. Relaying the hedges and replanting to ensure they are stock proof so sheep can be introduced to graze the meadow. This will keep the important features on the surface of the meadow visible.
3. Excavation of the dyke at the top to retrieve important artifacts. We are reliably informed that the orginal sluice controls were pushed into the dyke when it was filled in.
5. Creation of a path through the meadow to reflect the extent of the Great Pond of Clipstone.
6. Discussion with the Environment Agency are being sought in order to assess the feasibility of restoring a more regular water flow to the Vicar Water Brook.
